Ghost in despair

In a traditionnal and peaceful castle a Ghost has been reigning happily for 500 years. The owner of the castle decides to sell this haunted and fearful place. English people would never discuss the existance of the ghost, this is tradition and in Vistorain England nobody would dare to laugh or deride tradition nor would they buy the monument. Unaware, the buyer is, by chance, an American family with a positive and very untraditionnal attitude. Consequently the spirit is gravely insulted by the various members of that family when asked to lubrify his chains to make less noise. to his dismay, even the blood he places on the mantle piece of the fire is washed every day, he cannot even flee to USA as he learns that spirits are heavily taxed over there. In the end he is saved by a gentle little girl who helps him reconcile himself with his dead wife. Oscar Wilde is widely crititcal of the society of his time and this "nouvelle" is hihgly enjoyable.
